The Preemie Project-Booties, Bonnets and Blankets for Premature Babies

Hey Everyone!
I have a charity project that I would like to share with you. It is called "The Preemie Project" and you can find it at the following site:

Myself and my volunteers are knitting premature baby items for donation to hospital NICUs. Currently the hospital we will be donating to is The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.

Many of the babies in the NICU are very tiny and sick, and many spend a long time in the hospital. For me it is really special to be able to give the babies something snuggly and soft to wear during their recovery. You can choose to use the patterns we're using that are so simple, any knitter could complete these projects. You can also choose to use your own pattern if you wish.

For anyone interested, I am asking for a donation of baby booties, hats, blankets and yarn in any amount. Click here for a picture, sorry it's not the best, of the booties and hats. You can check out The Preemie Project website for all of the volunteer info.

If you do decide to volunteer you are free to spend as little or as much time that you have available on this project. Booties times four

Here's two identical pairs of booties made in my "old-school" five-needle aran-and-lace pattern. Click for larger.

A girlfriend, who hasn't knit in years, whined until I made these for someone she knows who just had an enormous (6 pounds each) pair of twin girls.

Newborn size (like the tiny pair on the far left, in "micro-spun" yarn split down to three plies, on size one needles) would have been way too small by the time these reached the intended wearers.

Since I knew from experience (bitter, bitter experience) that making four identical booties would take me a while, and that there would be a long delay between me getting these to the girl who asked me to make them, to her taking them to the person with the twins, I made these with really fat sport yarn (micro-spun) on size six needles.

In trying to use the same pattern to make a larger bootie, I learned a lot about how tension affects proportions. For instance, if the foot does not start forming a cup by the time you reach the third side, your needle is too big for your yarn. I had abandoned an earlier attempt at an entirely garter-stitch bootie using space-dyed sock yarn because the sides were too tight and the foot came out too small. Now I think I will try again on larger needles.

I finally made some booties!

A friend of ours had a baby girl a few weeks ago, so I had to get it together and finish some booties for them. Here's the almost-completed booties, which have since been sewn-up and shipped off:

I have some black-and-white versions of those tiny socks on the needles right now for a friend with a baby on the way, too.

Ann Norling Booties and Hat...

I finally finished the booties to match the hat. There's a HUGE defect with the booties but I think I've managed to hide it in the presentation.

This was knit on size 4 needles with Baby Dahl yarn. The pattern called for a garter stitch cuff with a K3 P1 K1 P1 rib and then basic garter stitch. All three portions were completed on one needle. The back and bottom of the bootie were seamed at the end.

Ugg booties with inner cuff

(Click for larger) I was eager to try a simple two-needle bootie pattern, but I thought the Ugg pattern needed a ribbed cuff to stay on. So, I added a hidden one inside the bootie.

To do this, I picked up along the inside of the ankle with a smooth yarn, worked four rows of stockinette, and finished with about a dozen rows of ribbing.

The ribbed cuff gets seamed first. (Then you get to pick the eyelashes out of the fashion yarn, so you can sew up with it.)

When you are done, the ribbing is hidden inside the bootie.

Here is the pink set of hat and booties. I used the same pattern for the hat and a new one for the booties. I am also knitting these for a nearby hospital. I really like this bootie pattern!

Bootie pattern:
-size 5 needles
-cast on 29(35:41) sts and knit 4 rows
-work 8 rows in stocking stitch.
-Dec Row:K0(0:3), K2tog, [K1, K2tog] 9(11:11) times, K0(0:3)
-Purl 1 row
-Eyelet Row: K1, *yfwd, K2tog, K1(2:3); rep from * to last 3(2:3) sts, yfwd, K2tog, K1(0:1).
-Purl one row

shape instep:
-K14(16:20) and turn
-P9(9:11) and turn
-work 10(12:14) rows in stocking stitch on center 9(9:11) sts. break off yarn
-with rs of work facing, pick up and K8(10:12) sts up side of instep, Knit across 9(9:11) sts of instep, pick up and k8(10:12) sts down side of instep then K across rem 5(7:9) sts.
-knit 7(9:11) rows
-K1, K2tog, K10(14:18) K2tog through back loop [tbl], K5(5:7), K2tog, K10(14:18), K2tog tbl, K1.
-Knit to end
-K1, K2tog, K9(13:17), K2tog tbl, K3(3:5), K2tog, K9(13:17), K2tog tbl, K1.
-knit to end
-cast off, join leg and foot seam. Thread ribbon through eyelets.

Simple Newborn hat and bootie pattern!!

Here is a baby hat and booties that I have just completed. I am knitting hats like these for a hospital nursery. I am knitting booties like these and other patterns for the neonatal ICU of a hospital nearby. Both of these patterns are really simple.

Hat Pattern:
-newborn size
-Use size 6 needles. Cast on 30 stitches.
-Pattern: *Knit one Row. Purl one Row. Knit one row.* Repeat from *to* 34
times. (102 rows total) Cast off.
-with yarn needle, draw on long edge of knitting together. sew short edges together and add pompom on top.

Parker's hat & booties

Here are the hat and booties I made for my sister-in-law's baby, Parker, who is due to actually be born on or near December 10th. (I used this pattern for the booties - still the only bootie pattern I've made! - and this pattern for the hat.)

The booties were a total bitch to seam together, and even after three pairs made from the same pattern I still can't sew them up so that they truly look like they match each other!

The yarn I used, Paton's Divine in rose riche, was extraordinarily soft but wasn't all that easy to knit on #3 needles with all that bumpy texture going on. (I have to say, the bigger the needle the more I enjoy knitting... unless it's a good 100% wool yarn on bamboo needles and then I don't care!)

The women at the baby shower oohed and aahed, and said, "You made these?" in a satisfying way, and the mom-to-be seemed to think they were cute enough. (I couldn't tell if they'll ever be actually used, though.) Still, it was my first time making baby things and giving them away in the quasi-formal surrounds of a party, and overall I think it went well!

Also, i recently discovered a very cool pattern for baby booties. It is from the show Knitty Gritty on the DIY network . The pattern is for Ugg Boots for babies. you know, those big atrocious leather boots with wooly trim that all of the kids are wearing these days.... the bootie version is made out of suede yarn, and i think it is too cute!

I have almost finished the pink knot booties from 50 Baby Bootees to Knit . i just have to seam up the last one. Has anyone chosen any pattern/yarn combos that they plan to work on?

I worked out a color change pattern in the Knitting for Baby pattern to simulate little mary janes with socks in them.
. you can see a bigger pic in the finished bootie gallery.

so far i have only completed one. it is a little frustrating because there are additional modifications that i would like to make, but i have to make the second bootie to match. I knit this out of shachenmayer micro microspun acrylic which i think could be the ultimate in bootie yarn. it is pretty fine gauge, supersoft, and washable. unfortunately i didnt figure this out until elann was pretty much out of it, so getting more is out of the question.

Also, Mush finished her adaptation of the "Angora baby booties." They are cute!.

Here is a picture of 2 types of booties that ingrid made. Both are from Knitting for baby with slight modifications.

Yesterday I gave away my first pair of completed booties. i gave the hippie booties to their rightful owner, and they were too small. dangit! the baby's older sister quickly adopted them for her baby doll. at least they fit something.

Two-tone booties

Dang! my whole entry just got deleted, now I have to reconstruct it.
I'm making the "stay on booties" from "Knitting for Baby". I have made a couple modifications to the pattern that make me much happier with it. In particular the is a weird pointy toe thing that happens that I've tried to fix. Instead of k2tog at the beginning of each row while making the toe, I'm using: k2tog k5 ssk, knit back plain. This make the pointy toe thing much less prominent. I'll try to remember to get some pictures taken next tuesday if Karrie and I remember.
I'm also making these ones as two-tones to match the pinwheel cloche I made out of "Knitting for Baby".

Well, we are off to a slow start. Not too many people interested, but it will still be fun. I dont actually have any members to officially add, but my friend in my knitting circle was working on a bootie, so i am forcibly adding her.
